The open depository of glass, ceramics, and porcelain is part of the permanent ART DESIGN FASHION exhibition at the Museum of Applied Arts in Brno, part of the Moravian Gallery. It was created in collaboration with curator Radek Wohlmuth and the architectural studio edit!.
The depository spans two rooms of the museum, conceived as modular furniture that breaks down the psychological barriers typically standing between visitors and displayed objects. Overloaded display cases evoking classic depository practice alternate with more airy spaces holding just a few solitary pieces.
The selection of exhibits isn’t based only on the divide between fine and applied art or on dating, but also on technique, technology, color, or theme. Inside the glass boxes, visitors can spot small scenic tableaux and even collections of curiosities – beer mugs among them.
The concept is built on a bipolar line of black and white: ceramics and porcelain represent density and opacity, while glass stands for transparency. This contrast, paired with bold use of color, heightens the visitor experience – the “Black Depo” feels mysterious, while the “Light Depo” is bright and open.
